Frank and Lizzie Cudgill are the perfect couple – influential, respected, wealthy beyond their means, but childless after seven years of marriage. When they adopt Daniel their happiness is complete – until they notice him exhibiting strange and disturbing character traits.

Parents will go to great lengths to raise their children well. Daniel succumbs to their nurturing and he emerges from his difficult years stronger, more disciplined, successful and brilliant.

Daniel returns to the family farm from university and a successful career years later. He’s made it just in time to witness his beloved mother sigh her last breath. But then Frank’s death follows within months and Daniel is noticeable by his absence at the funeral.

Frank’s friend, Dr Mark Foster, is uneasy. The facts concerning Frank’s death don’t add up. When his investigation starts, someone is watching, threatening him, biding time. Can Mark resolve the questions surrounding Frank’s death? And if he can, at what cost to himself and the woman he loves?

The Prodigal The story of ultimate Betrayal eBook HC Maree

In The Prodigal, HC Maree has crafted a literary novel with a medical mystery at its heart. The narrative is set in South Africa and is steeped in the spectacular landscapes and exotic plants and animals of that country. The story revolves around the medical practice of a group of dedicated cardiologists. One of them, Dr. Mark Foster, is not sure that his recently departed best friend died of natural causes, as the coroner reported. He embarks on a quest to find out what really happened to him.

The writing is graceful and leisurely, a kind of travelogue of a beautiful country. At times, I was reminded of Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian, where the pure pleasure of being there sometimes rivals the importance of the story.

The author is at her best in the chilling portrait she creates of a sociopathic child and the havoc he wreaks on all those around him. That character is vividly real and lingers in the reader's mind long after the story is concluded.

I would have preferred that a lengthy but interesting subplot about theft at the medical office had been integrated into the medical mystery, but it was not. Also I confess that I was disappointed with the resolution of the mystery, which seemed quite abrupt and not altogether convincing after the prolonged buildup.

Overall, I enjoyed the book very much and I look forward to Ms. Maree's next novel.

The Prodigal The story of ultimate Betrayal eBook HC Maree Reviews

As far as I can tell this is H C’s first published work and she is to be congratulated on an easy to read novel set in South Africa’s North West and Limpopo provinces. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the countryside although the thought of geckos and poisonous snakes in the garden is worrying. Throughout there was a measure of medical detail but it was well explained.

As the synopsis says this is a story about a badly behaved youngster and the love that his adopted parents have for him. The tale is well told and we are given in-depth detail into the characters of Frank and Daniel.

The book built to a climax with some action and a few surprises. The downside is that the main story does not fill the book and woven around it are a number of minor stories involving the medical centre and its staff.

These secondary plots have a ring of authenticity, but I found most of them rather lightweight with one dimensional characters. This was a contrast to the grit of the main storyline which may have been deliberate but I just found myself yearning to get back to Daniel.

I have awarded the book three stars.

Anyone who embarks on a debut novel should be commended. It isn't as easy as it seems. This novel was an easy , descriptively lyrical read with an unexpected twist at the end.
Any medical book fascinates me. And when there is a twist and its a page turner, it's the best. I downloaded this on a Saturday and could not put it down. Beautifully written. Well done for a debut novel.
One of those 'unputdownable' books. Medical drama and enthralment and intrigue with a serious twist.... Congrats to the author. She captured and painted a story that needed very little coloring in. Hope she has started the next one....
This is a medical mystery and takes place in South Africa. I enjoyed reading about the lives of the characters which were so far removed from my own. The author has packed a great deal of mystery and suspense into a relatively short novel, and it's done quite well. We follow several characters as they work through not only a suspicious death, but some clever computer hacking as well.

The Prodigal is intelligent and well-edited. There was a great deal of medical terminology mentioned, but certainly not to the point where a novice would have trouble following the story line. I did find Daniel's character to be dark and disturbing (animal lovers beware...there's a nasty scene that I personally found upsetting), but obviously readers were supposed to see him this way. Some of the awful things he did made my skin crawl, so the author has done a great job painting the picture of a deeply disturbed individual.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes reading engaging medical mysteries. I'd certainly read another book by this author again!
