A riveting new rural thriller from three-time Shamus Award nominee and two-time Derringer Award winner Richard Helms!

Prosperity, North Carolina, used to be a red clay farming community populated mostly by the descendents of families that had settled the land over two centuries earlier. Then, developers from a huge city in the next county discovered its rolling hills and winding streams, and decided to turn it into a suburb.
Former Atlanta cop and hometown high school football hero Judd Wheeler returned to Prosperity eight years ago to take a position as the Chief of the new Police Department. With one tragic exception, it’s been a quiet, uneventful job.
Now, the body of a young illegal immigrant Mexican girl has been found alongside the banks of Six Mile Creek. For the first time since his return to Prosperity, Wheeler finds himself with a murder on his hands.

His investigation will place him in direct opposition with his closest childhood friend, ratchet up racial and class tensions in a community already stretched to the limit, and nearly tear his quiet little town to pieces as he searches for the murderer of Gypsy Camareno. At the same time, coincidences he can’t ignore will stoke Chief Wheeler’s own nightmares of terrible events years earlier, and interfere with his ability to see the case clearly.

In the small North Carolina town of Prosperity, the line between desperation and salvation runs right down the middle of Six Mile Creek.

"Six Mile Creek is the most engrossing crime novel I've read all year! This is a real story, with real characters. For me, that's as good as it gets!"
-Steve Hamilton, Edgar Award winning author of The Lock Artist

"...When the body of a Mexican migrant worker is found along the banks of Six Mile Creek, Police Chief Judd Wheeler uncovers his town's dark side. Discrimination against migrant Hispanics and tensions between old residents and newbies keep the plot moving to an unexpected ending.”
-Library Journal

"...Tightly plotted and refreshingly fast-paced. Veteran Helms introduces a likable protagonist in a promising new series…”
-Kirkus Reviews

"...Helms, a Shamus Award nominee and a two-time Derringer Award winner, has created an engrossing and timely story that will appeal to a wide range of readers."
-Barbara Bibel, ALA Booklist

Six Mile Creek edition by Richard Helms Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is avery well written mystery from the talented pen of Richard Helms, who has won numerous awards for his works in this genre. The Judd Wheeler mysteries show a small town cop with a bit of emotional baggage, exercise his sleuthing skills in some very brilliant ways.

This has the tension, the suspense, and the potential violence open would expect from this type of book. It serves to tighten the pleasure of reading it. There characters are realistic, as are the descriptions of the setting, the personalities, and the forensic details of detective police work.

All in all, a very enjoyable read. You can't go wrong with this one.

Six Mile Creek edition by Richard Helms Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Prosperity in Bliss County North Carolina was a rural small town of framers and their families until the developers in nearby urban Parker County saw money to be made. The town was turned into a bedroom community suburb.

After leaving the Atlanta Police Department, Judd Wheeler took the job of police chief in his hometown; his staff consists of two deputies. One of them Marbury calls to tell him Donnie Clift is dead; Judd proves it was a suicide. Not long afterward the body of Hispanic teen is found near Six Mile Creek. Morgan Sheriff's Department Investigator Neerjah Patel declares a homicide occurred and the body had been moved. The parents of Gitana "Gypsy" Camarena arrive at Judd's office to ask about the victim as their daughter went missing three days ago. Judd knows they are illegals so they failed to report her vanishing; he also knows the dead girl is Gitana. As he investigates her murder Judd finds many townsfolk want the illegals gone and this case dropped.

This is a taut regional police procedural with three groups distrusting one another and Wheeler caught in the middle trying to do the right thing. The homicide raises the anxiety amongst Hispanics especially illegals, the long time farm families who demand a return to the past, and the affluent suburbanites who prefer CSI on TV. With racism, discrimination, and loathing, Wheeler and other law enforcement officials have their work cut out to solve the case and keep everyone calm. Six Mile Creek is a superb whodunit due to the rising tension.

I enjoyed this book, and didn't guess the conclusion. He is a good writer. The characters were well developed. I will read more of Helms.
I have read several books by Richard Helms and this one, Six Mile Creek, is my favorite! Well written and entertaining.
Prosperity, NC, is in the midst of a multiple culture-clash. It has been discovered by the well-to-do, fleeing onerous tax rates in neighboring metropolitan areas, who are displacing the native farm families, and by a growing Hispanic population, many of whom don't have the benefit of green cards. For Judd Wheeler, a former Atlanta cop returning home, becoming chief of the three-officer police department was supposed to be a restful way to raise his son and pass into retirement.

Discovery of a beautiful, teenaged Latina's body on the banks of Six Mile Creek quickly brings on big-city complications. Racial tensions, promiscuity, a burgeoning drug situation all become manifest as Judd digs into the crime, coupled with the political pressures money and influence bring to bear on a small-town city council. The plot is well-devised and compelling, its solution satisfying.

The character of Judd Wheeler is likeable in the extreme. Not a super-sleuth, he is a hard-working, decent man, dealing with a teenaged son as best he can, and the memories and flashbacks of his own tragedy wearing him down. His juggling of the various factions and interests in town, while trying to solve the case and avoid a general race-conflict seems very real, and, thus, pleasing to this reader, at least.

Mr. Helms has simply produced a good book with SIX MILE CREEK. You should read it.
